15inch steel wheels with 312mm brake? possible?

If i upgrade to 312mm discs will 15 inch steel wheels still fit?

At a disc increase of 24mm I'm assuming I need 12+mm clearance on the current 288 set up

For anyone needing to know. I checked clearances today. 2016 spec mk4 caddy. trw caliper, mk7 golf style. 288mm set up.

There is about 7mm clearance to steel 15inch wheels No chance in hell a 312mm set up will fit without bigger wheels. However, only an additional 12mm of clearance is needed, so 16inch+ steels should be sufficient, provided they have same interior profile as oem VW 15s.

This is very useful to know for when measuring up for a new spare wheel, which is what I'm looking up at the moment. I'm doing new big brakes front and rear, new alloys and there's just a question mark about what to do about a spare?

There's another thread on here where rear wheel clearance over upgraded brakes is discussed.

I remember it was a good thread because it talks about the problem of not being able to store a spare wheel in the undercarriage that's big enough to clear your front big brake callipers. When you get a puncture on your front wheel, you can switch one of your rear alloys to the front, because that wheel will clear the big brakes, and fit your stored spare wheel to the empty rear wheel.

However, someone then goes on to suggest that your standard 15" steel full size spare that fits in the undercarriage will also clear almost any upgraded rear brake callipers.

I think OP is discussing measurements for front brake callipers - I could be wrong but might be similar for rear brake measurements too?

Anyway, the point being, I'm sizing up a set of 18" alloy rims with 330mm front brakes and 310mm rear brakes (Shout out to SF Tuning for the all in one Caddy big brake kits).

If OP's original 15" rim only just fits over their 288mm calliper, I doubt it would fit over a 310mm rear calliper.

So a suitable size for a spare to clear over big rear brakes might be a 16" rim? Maybe alloys can offer more clearance than steelies. But still, shouldn't be too difficult to find a 16-17" rim that's narrow enough to fit in the undercarriage storage. I think the thread I saw discussed a 205/width tyre would fit in the undercarriage, just about, whereas most people are running 225/width 18" rims that clear larger brake callipers. The original 15" steel rims are 195/.

Hi guys, just adding my 2p. But has anyone thought about using a spacesaver as a spare?? Im sure that would clear the brakes and would fit in the spare wheel carrier. Just a thot.

Theres plenty to choose from on ebay. I dont need a fancy spare as im using 18inch steels and standard brakes. But just thot it mite be an option for guys needing a spare to work with big brakes.

My R32ran has 312's - 16's fit on the FRONT, 15's don't.

Because I fitted the 4motion, I ended up with the vented 310mm rear brakes - the 16's do NOT fit over the caliper, hence needing 17's. Even with the 17's, there is VERY LITTLE clearance with brand new pads/discs..
