another case of water ingress in passenger footwell – VW Caddy 1.4 TSI European

Hi all!

I’ve been following the forum for a while now and have picked up a lot of useful tips, so thanks to everyone here for sharing their knowledge :D

I’m having a water ingress issue on my 2016 VW Caddy 1.4 TSI (European with factory rubber floor).

The scuttle drains have been cleaned out (no leaves or debris left), but whenever it rains I still get water into the passenger footwell. The smell afterwards is noticeable, but the insulation under the rubber flooring is dry and doesn’t smell – I think the rubber floor has spared me bigger problems compared to carpet.

I’ve looked through a bunch of threads here about water leaks, but I haven’t seen anyone with quite the same symptoms. In my case:
• Water is getting in through the cabin air filter housing.
• There’s also a thin stream coming out of a small hole in the centre of the A/C heater unit (see photo, arrows where the water leaks).

Has anyone dealt with this before? Would it make sense to pull the wheel arch liner to get better access for sealing it up?

Any pointers appreciated!

A common culprit seems to be the windscreen, has it been replaced. Try pouring water over screen and see if that is the cause.
